Sermon 15-5-3

Reading

Fifth Sunday of Easter

1. John 3: 18 & 24

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

What a beautiful passage. It really speaks for itself! We are children of God! We shall love one another like children, innocently, not knowing of good or evil. Our love shall not be in word or speech, but in deed, truly. How often do words and human thoughts get in the way of true love?! Be confident of God’s love and assure your heart before him. Let him act in you, how could we presume that our words or thoughts should supersede those of God which are inside us?!

We know when we act according to God’s will! We cannot take any exception in our actions. If our hearts condemn us, if we feel our actions are not in accordance with what is in our hearts, we cannot hide from God! He knoweth all things!

But when our hearts condemn us not, if we feel we are acting according to God’s will and submit ourselves to his power, then we can be confident towards God, we are doing His Will!

If we are like that, things will go well for us! We shall receive whatever we ask in our hearts, because we keep his commandments and act according to His Will. And let me remind you, Dear Reader, He knows what is good for us better than we do ourselves! If we lead our lives in His Love, giving ourselves over to His will, we will desire loving happiness with one another according to His Will! Is this surprising? We will receive what we ask and do those things that are pleasing in His Sight!

This is the commandment, that we should believe in the name of his son Jesus Christ! Now the word for name is onoma and the word for law is nomos. Onoma means everything appertaining to Jesus Christ in this case. If we believe in that and love one another, then we dwell in him and he dwells in us! We know he abideth in us when we feel His Spirit in us, and act according to His Spirit!

So let us go forth and lead our lives in the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ and love one another as he commanded us!

And let us invite others to join us in our happiness. This is what our Lord Jesus Christ said (John 15: 1 to 8):

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

And this is from the Psalms of King David (Ps 1):

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
