Everlasting Life! Don’t we all dream of it?
Then came to [him] certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
So God is the God of the living! There is a chapter in Greetings from Paradise called ‘Everlasting Life’. This chapter gives an explanation on Everlasting Life. The basis of this explanation still is the Ancient scientific ‘insight’ that the ejaculation is the complete child. People knew the ejaculation makes women pregnant and they thought it was similar to the contents of a chicken egg. When the hen properly sits on the egg these contents turn into a little chicken.
Most translators render the verb gamein as ‘to marry’, but it can just as much mean casual intercourse. Furthermore it can even mean what we would call adultery. Here however, the topic is about owned women. Such women had to bear a known heir to a man who had an inheritance to give. Early Christians were poor. So they belonged to those who kept their women in common in the community (Even The Apostles Had Sex!).
So what is Everlasting Life? It is the procreation of oneself through his own sons. For men that is. Do we need to know who our son is? Not really, we shall love all our neighbours as ourselves. This attitude will create a loving community and our son will lead a Happy Life within it. Those who worship property and are forced into a role by their father will not. So they will not be worthy of the world of resurrection (verse 35!)
Those worthy of resurrection don’t marry. They are like the angels of God. They are the children of God, the result of the image in which he created them. Male and Female created he them (See Gen. 1: 27)! Luke 1: 49, God does ‘great things’ to his children! God certainly does not want them to die out!
really the procreation through one’s own sons? Jesus gave as evidence that God had called himself the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob! We would say that these people were already dead at the time. But they lived through their sons. The Nation Israel is Jacob! Conservative Jews today see women as empty vessels and all the descendants of Jacob are Jacob. Gen. 32: 10: Jacob said, ’… with (nothing but) my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.’ He saw himself in his own offspring.
So what is Everlasting Life to us today? It is the gate to Happiness! It is living in the Image of God in which he created us male and female in Gen. 1: 27. Life has changed dramatically through the ages, but the source of Happiness has not. The Name Of God, the one we are not to use in vain, is an expression of that Joy! We live in times of overpopulation and birth control. Yet, the source of Joy, the Image of God, has not changed. Its management should. In the old days the Joy of being male and female ensured Everlasting Life! Today we have to be thoughtful to ensure that mankind can have a longer existence, even if not Everlasting Life. The Joy of life, its purpose however, will never change! It is the Image of God in which He created us!
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
